  • Sabbaticals for research unit directors of Université Sorbonne Paris Nord (Science Committee meeting of May 26, 2009 and changes to procedures of August 2010)

In order to enable teaching researchers and the directors and assistant directors of research units (or LabEx) of the university to pursue effective research in the best conditions in parallel with their management responsibilities, the university provides them with the possibility of a sabbatical from teaching. This measure is obviously not intended to be a substitute for the pursuit by the university of a policy for the opening of administrative and technical positions in laboratories, many of which are notorious for having a lack of research support staff.

    Conditions

    • You must be the official director or assistance director of a research unit recognized by the ministry and the university (or be the coordinator of a LabEx).

    • You are not doing any additional hours of teaching during the years concerned.

    • Sabbaticals are valid for a number of years for the entire duration of the directorship appointment but cannot be accumulated. It must be renewed whenever the researcher is newly appointed or re-appointed, which is the case for the majority of research unit directors for 2014.

    Length of sabbatical

The standard sabbatical is 1/3 of statutory obligations (equivalent to 64 hours of tutorials). It can, upon the decision of the Research Committee, be reduced to 1/6 or increased to 2/3 depending on the specific situation of each laboratory.

    Procedures

The director’s request must include a covering letter specifying the conditions of the directorship role in full detail (staff required, volume of administrative activity, all the responsibilities external to the laboratory, etc.), a CV and a list of recent publications as well as a brief description of current and future research.

Any sabbaticals requested must not interfere with the proper running of the teaching departments, which must have time to prepare substitute teachers.

In order to be compensated, the institute or department concerned must make the additional hours corresponding to the period of relief from teaching service the object of the following:

    • A declaration including records of service and, if necessary, a reference document specifying the number of hours and nature of the work

    • Negotiations between the institute or department concerned and the senior management of the university during their budget discussions in the autumn

    Key dates

Please contact the Office for Research and Doctoral Studies at 01 49 40 32 41 to submit an application in electronic format (.doc or .pdf) no later than the beginning of September 2015. The opinion of the research committee of the parent institute of the researcher’s original laboratory (LLSHS, SMBH, DSPS or Galilée) as well as the opinion of the institute or department where the researcher will be working must be submitted to the Office for Research and Doctoral Studies before the date the Academic Committee meets to deliberate.

Directors who are only nominated or whose position is only renewed in the autumn can still submit an application afterwards.
